Rushen Abbey

Isle of Man

Manx history and heritage

The site of the original Rushen Abbey and the site of the former Academy nightclub was acquired by Manx National Heritage and, after archaeological investigation and extensive restoration, was re-opened to the public in 2000.

The design for the abbey grounds was based around the archaeological remains, evidence of cultivated areas and the original course of the Silverburn River. Planting is low-key, in keeping with the setting, and includes a demonstration horticultural area growing plants typical of monastery gardens.

The project has been successful in creating a peaceful, restful garden whilst giving an insight into this part of Manx history and heritage.
